Bettencourt Green Building Supplies (Bettencourt GBS) is dedicated to providing quality green building materials to designers, architects, contractors and homeowners on the East Coast, Bettencourt GBS offers innovative, environmentally preferable products at affordable prices.

The staff at Bettencourt have been long-time supporters of Rainforest Relief's cause and Rainforest Relief provides advice to them about what woods to avoid and what alternatives are truly 'green'.

Bettencourt GBS grew out of Bettencourt Wood, begun by Bart Bettencourt. In seeking to utilze green materials in his own furniture designs, Bart found it difficult to obtain the materials because they weren't distributed in New York City. The only alternative was to buy them retail from the manufacturer, often shipped across the country. This proved much too expensive and was the main bottleneck in the utilization of these materials.

Smith & Fong manufactures the Plyboo® brand of
bamboo plywood, available from Bettencourt GBS in a number
of configurations. Above is horizontal amber & vertical amber and
below is horizontal natural & vertical natural.

Bart began to buy larger quantities and other furniture and cabinet makers in the area began to ask him to order them a few sheets along with his orders.

Plyboo's Strand board, in Honey/Light and Dark, is
also made from bamboo.

Eventually Bart and Matt Berk, co-founder of Bettencourt GBS, decided to expand this into a real business and thus Bettencourt Green Building Supplies was born.

Now with a warehouse in Greenpoint and a showroom in Williamsburg, Bettencourt GBS has become the premier supplier of 'green' sheet materials and is rapidly expanding into other green bulding supplies such as plaster, finishes, etc.

Environ makes a number of sheets made from wheat straw,
sunflower seed husks and other agricultural residues. Shown
above are Dakota Burl® and Environ® Agate and below are
Environ® Red and Midnight.

Bettencourt GBS specializes in sheet materials, such as Plyboo bamboo plywood, Kirei board (made from sorghum stalks), Woodstalk wheat straw board, Environ Biocomposite panels such as Environ® (made from a patented blend of recycled paper, agricultural residue and resin; Dakota Burl® (made from sunflower seed husks) and Biofiber® (made from wheat straw), and Durapalm™ plywood and flooring, made from the wood of the coconut palm tree, pictured below.

Durapalm® plywood made by Smith & Fong from spent
coconut palm trees, is also available as flooring. Biofiber®, made
by Environ Biocomposites, is made from wheat straw.

Kerei plywood is made from the straw of the sorghum plant.
