Pencils
One of the most tragic and ridiculous uses of rainforest wood is for pencils. But the reality is that many of the pencils used in the U.S. are made from an endangered rainforest wood called jelutong. Jelutong is logged from the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. You can tell it apart from the usual incense cedar because it’s lighter in color, has no grain and the pencil will bend a little. It’s very common in imported pencils. But some U.S. companies import jelutong blanks to use to manufacture pencils.
Americans bought an estimated 4.3 billion pencils in 1998, a 53% jump from 1991 (Wall street Journal, Nov. 24, 2000, “A Pencil Icon Tries to Get a Grip”).
