Georgia-Pacific (GP) probably remains the single largest US importer of tropical plywood. They use lauan for backing paneling (theyre the largest manufacturer of paneling), trailer construction and cabinets.

Rainforest Action Network began a boycott of GP in 1991. Rainforest Relief participated in two action targeting GP. In the first, organized by New Jersey Earth First with the help of Wetlands Rainforest Action Group, Tim Keating, RRs director was arrested along with five other activists, while blocking the gate into GPs Yardville, NJ distribution yard.

The second, organized by RAN in California, also confronted a GP distribution facility. There were no arrests.

The GP campaign was never called off but RAN discontinued its actions targeting GP in 1992.

GP continues to import and use large volumes of lauan and imports mahogany and other woods for paneling facing.

While contracted with Greenpeace, Keating contacted GP, who responded with a letter claiming an intent to phase out of tropical plywood imports. There was no mention of a date by which a total phase-out would occur.

GP also imports a good deal of lumber and millwork from Russia, where illegal logging is also rampant and a liquidation of boreal forests is now in full swing.

As well, GP imports tropical woods such as mahogany for facing of paneling and custom millwork.

GP manufacturers consumer products such as Dixie disposable paper cups, plates and bowls and disposable plastic flatware, Brawny, So-Dri, Green Forest, Mardi Gras and Sparkle paper towels and napkins, Zee and Vanity Fair napkins and Angel Soft, MD and Soft n Gentle bathroom tissue.

All GP products should be boycotted until GP announces a specific date by which they will end the imports, use and sales of all wood from endangered forests.
