Wicker and rattan furnishing are fairly sustainable in that both materials are from fast-growing grasses harvested from forests usually by hand, or from small plantations.

Wicker tends to come from China whereas rattan tends to come from Indonesia.

The timber industry in Indonesia — which is centralized and close to the halls of power — has specifically tried to wipe out the rattan industry — which is diffuse and local.

Rattan demand provides income for people living in and close to forests and provides a counterweight to the destruction of forests by loggers.
