One of the largest causes of the loss of tropical forests is for fuelwood and charcoal, which are major sources of energy in many countries. The cutting of fuelwood for charcoal production seems to be more of a problem in tropical dry forests than in tropical moist forests.

In many areas of rainforests, a large source of fuel is charcoal. Charcoal is made from trees cut from the forests.
