The massive retailer Kmart is participating in the rapid destruction of Indonesia's rainforests - the third largest area of rainforest in one country - by selling outdoor furniture made of nyatoh, most likely illegally logged from these areas.
The rainforests of Indonesian Borneo are estimated to last only until 2010 at the current rate of destruction, mostly due to logging, illegal and 'legal'.
One of the woods in highest demand is nyatoh, being used as a teak replacement for outdoor furniture. Nyatoh has been available in the US for only about 6 years but in that time the demand has grown enormously.
Illegal logging in Indonesia is estimated at 75 - 90%. National parks are being targeted by the logging 'mafia', with support from local police and military personnel. Some parks now have permanent infrastructure to facilitate illegal logging. The Indonesian government has admitted that the problem is out of control and one minister asked that importing countries help by not buying illegal wood.
Kmart, along with a dozen or more other companies, is selling nyatoh outdoor furniture under the Martha Stewart brand.
The "Stockbridge" bistro set and the "Sierra Vista" collection are both made of nyatoh.
Ironically, the Sierra Vista collection is named for a city that Kmart states is revered for its "pristine environment". Meanwhile, the collection is helping destroy Indonesia's rainforests.
Many other companies are selling outdoor furniture made from nyatoh (see our Outdoor Furniture campaign) or other woods from endangered forests, such as balau, kapur or jatoba. Don't buy outdoor furniture made of wood unless it is from second-growth forests or you have checked with Rainforest Relief first.
Send a message to Kmart and tell them to stop fueling illegal logging and the destruction of the last rainforests of Indonesia. Email Kmart from their website or phone their customer service at 1-866-562-7848 and tell them to stop selling products made of wood from endangered forests.
