Restoration Hardware is a fast-growing retail and catalog chain selling furniture, home products and hardware. Restoration also owns a furniture manufacturer which supplies its stores and warehouses with a near-exclusive line of furniture.

Restoration carries an extensive line of nyatoh outdoor furniture as well as furniture made of hardwoods from Chile. Restoration Hardware was the first large retailer to sell nyatoh outdoor furniture as an alternative to teak. Nyatoh is being logged from old growth rainforests in Indonesia.

Restoration is now also selling teak as well. Eighty percent of logging in Indonesia is occurring illegally, so even though teak is not coming from old growth rainforests in Indonesia, in order to reduce the impact on the forests, it must only come from operations that are certified and accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

“The Company operated 104 stores in 31 states, the District of Columbia and in Canada at February 2, 2002.
"The Company operates a direct-to-customer sales channel, in addition to its retail stores, which includes both catalog and Internet, and a wholly owned furniture manufacturer. Purchased by Restoration Hardware in 1998, The Michaels Furniture Company, Inc. offers a line of home and office furniture… Inter-company sales to Restoration Hardware represented virtually all of Michaels’ total sales during the fiscal year ended February 2, 2002.
"In fiscal 2001, the Company distributed approximately 20.5 million catalogs” — Multex Investor Business Summary

“In everything we do, our philosophy is simple: We want to surround ourselves with what we love. We want to inspire laughter as well as thought. This is more than our way of finding and selling products; it's a way of life we highly recommend.” — from Restoration Hardware’s website.

“The Dart & Smith collection is crafted from sustainably harvested Chilean hardwoods…” — Restoration Hardware's website [emphasis added].

But the furniture carries no independent certification that it is originating from forest operations that are even 'well-managed'. Logging in Chile’s temperate rainforests is far from sustainable. Hardwoods for export are being ripped from old growth rainforests helping to doom these temperate rainforests to a similar fate as those of the northwest United States.

Dear Mr. Friedman,

The rainforests of southeast Asia are one of Earth's greatest treasures. They should not be destroyed for timber for oudoor furniture for your company to sell.

Please inform me of a date by which you plan on ending the sales of furniture and any other products made with wood from endangered forests.

Sincerely,
