Crate & Barrel is selling furniture made of nyatoh, logged from the endangered rainforests of Indonesia.
Crate & Barrel's website states "[a]t Crate and Barrel, we use only timber harvested from responsibly managed forests. Not only are our sources established and reliable, they share our commitment to and respect for the replenishment and ecological practices essential to sustain our natural forests."
Yet even the Indonesian government has admitted that they cannot control illegal logging and that at least 75% of exports are from illegal sources. The Indonesian Forest Minister was recently prompted to ask help from importing countries, asking them to avoid buying wood from Indonesia until they can get the problem under control.
Nyatoh is one of the highest-value woods being illegally logged in Indonesia.
At the current rate of loss, the rainforests of the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo (called Kalimantan) will be nearly entirely degraded by 2010.
Companies such as Crate & Barrel must immediately end their purchases of wood from Indonesia and declare a policy to end the sales of wood products from all endangered forests.

Dear Retailers,
The rainforests of Indoneisa are dwindling rapidly at the hands of loggers. Wildlife such as the endangered orangutan may be extinct within a decade.
The Indonesian government and environmental groups have shown that at least 75% of the logging in Indonesia is being done illegally and even legal concessionaires are often operating outside the law.
While your policy states that you "use only timber harvested from responsibly managed forests", no wood from Indonesia can be considered responsibly managed. Even the Indonesian Forest Minister has admitthat they are unable to stop illegal logging and has asked importing countries to help by not accepting timber products from Indonesia.
Crate & Barrel should immediately cease all sales of nyatoh furniture and should work with Rainforest Relief to announce a date by which you will end the sales of all wood from endangered forests.
Sincerely,
|
