In 1997, Rock Bottom Restaurants, a chain based in Boulder, Colorado, committed in writing to ending its use of mahogany for built-in wood work and to using "certified" wood for tables in its "prototype" restaurants. In other restaurants, the company was shifting to all oak. This followed a telephone campaign by a university-based rainforest action group in Boulder that was begun in response to an article written by Rainforest Relief's Northwest Chapter director, Jeff Lockwood.
